What Is Vertigo Treatment?

Aug 22, 2023

Vertigo can be scary for people. Suddenly having the room spin around you while you sit or stand is disorienting, to say the least. While there are times when it goes away on its own after a bit of rest, it can be persistent. That means you might need to see a physical therapist for vertigo treatment.

According to The Good Body, most people who need physical therapy are over 65, but anyone can get vertigo and need help. It is important to know the process so that you're not caught by surprise during treatment. Here's what you need to know about vertigo assistance.

Diagnostic Session

Your physical therapist will look over your medical records and see if there's a definitive reason for your symptoms. Next, they will plan the best course of treatment for you. They can do everything from balance training and canalith repositioning maneuvers (where they move your head in certain ways) to neck stretching and vestibular exercises.

The reasons for your condition can range from paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) to concussion, Meniere's Disease, vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis, or vestibular migraine. If you are prone to drinking too much alcohol, you could wind up with vertigo. Your physical therapist will take your diagnosis into account and build a treatment plan around it.

Canalith Repositioning Maneuvers

This is when your physical therapist will move your head and body around into certain positions. The reason they do this is to move a calcium deposit that has fallen into your ear canal and into your inner ear chamber. This allows the body to absorb that calcium instead of it rattling around in your ear canal, which could be causing your vertigo.

Other Vertigo Exercises

There will be several different exercises done by your doctor. Your physical therapist may begin with simple stretches. They may massage tight areas around your neck. You might also learn how to hold your head along a certain vertical and horizontal axis to prevent further symptoms. You may be taught certain eye movements that can help you. Also, you may stand on a balance board to regain a sense of control. Your physical therapist will gladly explain everything to you and answer any questions. That way, you will feel comfortable as you work with them.

There are other options besides physical therapy, including medicinal options. If the vertigo is caused by an infection, you can take antibiotics as directed by professionals. There are surgical options, but that is usually the very last option. Physical therapy can help you move around in the world without feeling like it's spinning around you. That's worth your time and effort.
